Easy Chalk Painted Christmas Ornaments

This year I wanted to change things up a bit on my Christmas tree, but buying all new ornaments wasn't an option, so I came up with the idea of chalk painting some of my old ornaments.  It was so easy and I love how they turned out.  I used already purchased ornaments and supplies I had around the house.

Here are the supplies I used:

Chalk paint of your choice.
Small sponge brush
Fine grit sandpaper
And of course Christmas ornaments
Spray poly
Hammered bronze spray paint.

For the stars:

I used a little pot of chalk paint I purchased years ago that matches the turquoise in my living room, Waverly Inspirations Chalk in Agave, from Walmart.   I'm not even sure if they make this paint anymore, and I haven't seen it in Walmart either.

I removed the old hangers, wiped the ornaments down and then lightly brushed them with the paint, keeping the brush on the drier side.   Because I wanted them to look older and distressed, but I didn't want to do a lot of sanding on the metal I used a less it more philosophy, adding light touches until they looked the way I wanted.

I set them on paper to dry, and did the same thing on the other side.  After the paint dried, I took a piece of fine grit sandpaper, I used 320, and lightly went over the places I wanted to rough up a little more.  Because these stars are old, and were cheap in the first place, the silver paint is already naturally distressing.  I wanted to see the silver through the turquoise, not raw metal, so I was very gentle.  Once I was finished sanding, I coated both sides with a spray matte poly.

Large round ornaments:  These were the easiest of all.  I removed the hangers, wiped the ornaments off and spray painted with spray chalk paint.  I used Krylon Chalky Finish Colonial Ivory.  While I was painting the ornaments, I spray painted the hangers with the hammered bronze spray paint I had. Make sure the ornament is dry on one side before you try to move it to paint the other sides.  Once it's completely dry replace the newly painted hanger, and you/re ready to go.  I didn't seal these with poly or distress them.  I was really happy with the way they looked simply spray painted.

This whole project only took a couple of hours.  I was quick and easy and I was pleased with the way they looked on the tree.

What it cost:  This project cost me nothing, because I used supplies I already had around the house.

What I learned:  Chalk paint is so versatile, easy to paint, easy to sand, uber matte, very forgiving.

I hope you're all having a wonderful holiday season.  Thank you for checking me out and reading my post.  Please comment with any questions.

Create your own loveliness,
Tonni
